James Otis Hearn, a cherished father, brother, and friend, passed away on the 1st of January, 2026, in
Smiths Station, Alabama. Born on December 22, 1948, in
Columbus, Georgia, to Otis Hearn and Gladys Walden Hearn, James lived a full life marked by devotion to his family, his work, and his many interests.
James spent many years working at Canon Carpet in Opelika, where he was known for his strong work ethic and amiable nature. Beyond his professional life, James was an active member of the Union Grove Community Church, where his faith and community spirit shone brightly.
James was an avid collector and a regular at flea markets, always on the lookout for a good deal. His love for auctions and the excitement of the Casino were testaments to his adventurous spirit and his appreciation for a bit of friendly competition. James's keen eye for value and his negotiation skills were legendary among his friends and family.
Known for his impeccable personal style, James was always dressed to the nines. His shirts and pants were pressed to perfection, reflecting the pride he took in his appearance. This attention to detail was a part of who he was, and it spoke volumes about the care he put into every aspect of his life.
Above all else, James cherished time spent with his loved ones. He leaves behind his beloved daughters, Melissa Ray and Susan Brewczynski (Alan), his siblings, Wanda Morrison and Danny Hearn (Glenda), Ann Holt, and Patricia Moody will remember him as a caring and supportive brother. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Lauren Stillman (Cole), Jordan Highland, and Madison Highland and great grandchildren, Aubrey Stillman, Autumn Stillman, Blakely Runions, Mason Runions, Jace Miller, Audrey Tindall, Peyton Brown, Arie Brown, Randi Rothrock, Ezra Slayton, and Kenedy Rothrock, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. James's love extended to his canine companions, Cricket 1 and Cricket 2, who were a source of great joy and companionship for him.
James is preceded in death by his parents Otis and Gladys Hearn, brothers, Jerry Hearn, David Hearn, Kenny Hearn, and Mike Hearn and a granddaughter, Randi Runions, also brother in laws, Jackie Morrison and Ronnie Holt.
Visitation for James Otis Hearn will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2026, from 5 PM to 7 PM EST at Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted the following day, Monday, January 5th, 2026, at 4:00 PM EST at Union Grove Community Church, with Stephanie Giles and Kristi Garner officiating. It will be an opportunity for friends, family, and loved ones to gather and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who touched so many hearts.
James Otis Hearn will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a man who lived life with joy, embraced each day with enthusiasm, and cherished every moment with those he held dear.
