James Moore Herald of Victorian Village, Columbus Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on October 2, a few weeks after his 79th birthday.
Jim was the third child of six, born to James Kennedy Herald M.D. and Kathryn (Moore) Herald, in Youngstown, Ohio.
Jim attended St. Ed's and Ursuline HS in Youngstown (Class of 1964), and Ohio State University, with a B.A.in 1968.
He graduated from Law School at Ohio State in 1971, and remained a Columbus resident for over 60 years.
Jim never married, despite a few near-misses, so he became a favorite uncle of many nieces and nephews, both from his immediate family and his many friends.
His solo law practice was wide ranging, including criminal defense, family law, and real estate. He ventured into the nightclub business, enjoying wild but brief success in the mid 80's running Frankie J's, and its successors.
He then became more interested in the alternative healing arts, and became a prolific writer and illustrator.
Jim self- published three books, one a journal of personal musings, another entirely in verse covering "Secrets of the Male Universe". A third was a children's mystery book and story, also in verse. Just for fun.
Jim enjoyed word play, etymology, journaling, and neologisms, coining many quirky phrases.
Nicknamed "Falcon" during his years at Beta Theta Pi at Ohio State, he morphed into "Coony" in later years. Verbal "Coony-isms" became an integral part of the lexicon of his family and friends.
Jim was a generous listener whose door was always open, literally, to one and all. Visitors could stay days, weeks, or even months, if necessary, at his Neil Avenue Victorian Village home.
Jim is survived by two sisters, Jennifer Scavuzzo,(Robert, deceased) Allentown, PA and now Ithaca, NY, and Jean Herald, Santa Barbara, CA.
He has two younger brothers, Chris in San Juan Capistrano, CA, and Geoff (Susan) in Beaver,PA.
He lost a sister, Susan, in Atlanta at age 23, in 1970.
He is survived by nieces and a nephew, Laura Scavuzzo Wheeler (Jeff),Long Beach, CA, Julie Scavuzzo Shea (Ed), Virginia Beach, and Robert Scavuzzo(Katina), Ithaca, NY.
In addition, Jim's nieces and a nephew are Lisa Herald Coon (Charles), Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ryan Herald, DDS, Charleston, SC, and Laura Herald, Boston Mass.
Jim always stayed in touch with his "grandkids", too, Chloe and Blake Wheeler, Luciano and Matteo Scavuzzo, and Harrison and
Lillian Coon.
Jim was loved by so many who have reached out to the family, and we thank you all.
He will be greatly missed and long remembered.
A memorial celebration is being scheduled, and will be added to this site when arranged.
RIP Jim, Jamie, The Falcon, Coony, our dear brother and friend.
