On June 24, 2024, James B. Herring, of Milford, with loved ones at his side, peacefully went home to be with the Lord. He was 86. He was born in Newport, RI, to the late Lee and Adele Herring. He was predeceased by his brother William Herring and sister Evelyn Portz.

James graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Sciences from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia. He had a teaching career of over 40 years that included a Cathedral school in New York City, Inuit children in Alberta, Canada and Middle school students in Millsboro, DE, and Baltimore, MD.

Among his passions were collections that included models of cars and ships as well as clocks and coins. He enjoyed being a camp counselor at Camp Claggett Summer Camp in Buckeystown, MD, and also enjoyed playing the organ at church services. His strong faith led him to become an Assistant Chaplain for Milford Memorial Hospital where he visited patients.

James is survived by his son, Charles Wain and his fiancé Shanna Rosan, Charles’ step children, Katie Mancuso and family, Joie Miller and family, as well as a number of nieces and nephews: Thomas Portz, Robert Portz and family, Cynthia Murphy and family, Carolyn Holisz and family, Julia Hoyt and family, Virginia Annand and family, Sherill Russel and family, Susan Portz and family, Katherine Spangler and family and Laura Barnett and family.

A private family graveside service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, July 13th at Milford Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to The American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
