Around this time, he started working at Mount Baker Plywood as a sawyer and later became a forklift driver until he retired in 2007. He was a lifelong resident of Whatcom County.
While at the plywood mill, James met his long-time companion, Carolyn Roderick. They were together for more than 35 years until her death in 2013. James was a father and grandfather to Carolyn's children and grandchildren; Lori (Daryl) Larkin, Tony (Char) Roderick, Cathy (Troy) Woods, Carrie Roderick (Shane). Grandchildren; Hannah and Brett, Gabrielle and Chase, Ashley and Carly, Peyton and Liam.
