James Edward Hill was called home to be with the Lord on January 24, 2026, at 8:30am, at the age of 82. Born on June 1,1943 in
Bessemer, Alabama to Ruby Shepard and Sterling Hill. James lived a life rooted in faith, love, and steadfast devotion to God and family.
A man of deep belief and quiet strength, James walked faithfully with the Lord and reflected Christ's love through his actions, words, and service. He professed Christ at an early age at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. There his work in ministry began as the Sunday School Secretary.
James graduated J.S. Abrahms High School in 1962 where he met his high school sweetheart Johnetta Burrell. Upon completion of high school, he attended Tennessee State University until he was drafted into the Army.
On June 18,1966, he wed Johnetta Burrell, to this union three children were born. As a wonderful husband, he was a guiding light-patient, prayerful, and full of wisdom. His life was a testimony to faith, perseverance, and grace. In 1967, the family relocated to Detroit, Michigan. In
Michigan, he had a 30-year career at Chrysler Motor Company as an Inventory Manager ("The Crib"). He enjoyed bowling, tennis, playing cards, traveling, and even coaching the little league baseball team. Let us not forget to mention, his love of cooking. He enjoyed it so much that with his dear friends they started a Gourmet Group ("Eating 8") enjoying foods from around the world.
Upon his retirement, in 2005 James and Johnetta moved to Arizona where they were a part of the original 13 members of Greater Hope Christian Church. His infectious playful nature caused many to gravitate towards him. If you knew James Hill, his love language was teasing you. Not only an amazing father to his biological children, but also a father figure to many.
James is lovingly remembered by his wife Johnetta Hill, his children Derek (Sandra), Keith (Lilnise), Jenoia (Tyron); his grandchildren, Tyree, Mikayla, Taylor, Kendall, Conner, and Payton; and sister Claudia Washington and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who were blessed by his presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers William and Ernest, one sister Ruth and grandson Marshall whom he now rejoins in eternal rest.
The family takes comfort in knowing that James has heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant"
(Matthew 25:23), and now rests in the peace and promise of everlasting life.
