James Hilley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2016.

James Marion Hilley (11/2/1962-11/2/2016). James Hilley was born in 1962 to James Robert Hilley and Barbara Jeanne Mello. A military family, they traveled extensively until settling in the South Bay of San Diego. James enjoyed many activities including playing volleyball, cycling, music, and photography. He attended Bonita High School and graduated in 1980. He attended San Diego City College and earned an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts in 1988. He became and is part of an extended Samoan family in the early 1980’s. He started at Scripps in June 1981 in the Housekeeping department, in 1990’s he transferred to the Information Services, and finally transferred to the Supply Chain department, where he worked as an Inventory Management Analyst. He met Holly Santiago at Scripps and they courted for several years before marrying in 1998. James and Holly have three beautiful daughters; Christina, Corina, and Chailyn. With Christina, James began studying Tae Kwon Do, earning a Black Belt and becoming a jogyonim (instructor’s assistant) with the America’s Youth Outreach Program. This grew into an interest in practicing and instructing Kajukenbo.

James was a devoted husband and father. There was little he wouldn’t do for his daughters as evidenced by his often (ir)regularly painted toenails. He was an avid photographer who liked to take pictures of flowers and to chronicle family events. James typically answered the call to service; when needed, he volunteered at many cook out events at Sandburg Elementary and Mira Mesa High School, he was the Junior Varsity coach for Mira Mesa High school volleyball team for one year, and he mentored and taught many students at Tae Kwon Do and Kajukenbo. He had a strong self-confidence, a calming manner, a kind and loving heart, and a wicked/goofy sense of humor. He was a great friend, and was always willing to provide a helping hand when asked.

James passed the morning of his 54th birthday of a heart attack, having almost completed a visit with his father and family members in South Carolina.

James is survived by his wife, Holly, daughters, Christina, Corina, and Chailyn, his father, James Robert, and stepmother, Polly, his mother, Barbara Jeanne Mello, sisters, Jeannie and Jennifer, brother, Joseph, half-brother , Jimmy, his extended Samoan family, and many extended family members. All loved him dearly.

I can't believe that a year had already gone by; where did the time go. It feels like yesterday. Now with Dad gone, we are reliving your death all over again. I am sure you were there when dad left us; I am glad he had someone to escort him. Your girls miss you an awful lot. We hold you in our hearts always.

In loving memory

The girls and I are going to miss your kind spirit James. Thank you for all your help and the love of Taekwondo you encouraged in my kids and myself. God bless you and your family. I'm making a donation to Doctor's Without Borders in your memory because I know that you lived to help others. May you have eternal peace.

I will never forget the wink or handshake of a warm greeting from James at Friday night's Taekwondo classes. He was a friend to all of us there and a mountain of strength to all his students with a kind word of help or encouragement. Serena was very proud and encouraged by all the help James gave to her and is dedicating her road to black belt in honor of James. Serena's big sister Emilee also echoed these same sentiments and is very glad and honored to have know him and have him as a friend. Larry Lewis,

Always a smile; always a kind word. I will miss his daily question: "What's new, Kenny?" And my frequent response: "Same thing. Different day.But we're hanging in there." Then his response: "We are and everything is good!" Then the smile. We were both part of the I.S. Academy class of 2007-8 where Jimmy went off the usual I.S. project path assignment and came up with "Let's buy and operate a gourmet food truck for Scripps and serve Campus Point". That project plan was flawless. He was just a few years ahead of his time when it came to meeting the needs of Scripps whether it be a food concession concept or getting the right device in the hands of the clinical user.
My sincere sympathy to Holly and "his girls". He will be truly missed by his Scripps family. But his memory will always bring a smile to my face.

James will be truly missed. I got to know him at Tae Kwon Do where my son was one of those students he mentored. Dear Holly, girls and all our extended family.
We are so sorry for the loss you feel. We are so thankful that you were all able to attend our wedding in Toronto and that James was a part of that day. I have a very vivid memory of James at my parents house before the wedding playing with the girls and teaching martial arts to my bridesmaids daughter. He is such a lovely person and will be so missed but also lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Sending all our love,
The Valdez and Escaudro cousins and Auntie Elsie (Toronto and Montreal)

James would light up the room with his incredible smile and his charm. His personality and love of his work and his co-workers was evident every time we talked. James had a great sense of humor also. A very special man indeed! I am honored to have known James. Godspeed friend!

Dear Hilley family,
I am sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose a loved one, regardless if they have lived a full life. One thing I will say is that "WE" should be happy and allow our God to take his son into his care where he will forever be at peace. When you become sad just remember this; the love and laughter he shared with all of you will live in you forever. My sincerest condolences to you and your families. May God help you find peace and strength to get through this trying time. With all due respect.
