James "Jim" Francis Hitz
Bay City, MichiganJames "Jim" Francis Hitz, age 90, of Bay City, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. Born November 29, 1934, in Linwood, Michigan, Jim was one of eight siblings and very hard working. By the time most kids were riding bikes, Jim was already working at Hitz Cheese Company for his father, often driving long distances, something that shaped his strong character for the rest of his life.
As a young adult, he began working at American Hoist before starting a long and proud career at General Motors Steering Gear, where he worked in the power house. He retired after 25 years of dedicated service. A proud Army veteran, Jim served overseas in Germany and often told the story of serving with none other than Elvis Presley. Jim was never one to sit still. He walked up to five miles a day well into his older years and could always be found cutting grass, trimming the edges just right, or zipping off on his Amigo to see his neighbors when walking became harder. His independence was matched only by his sense of humor and warm heart. He was a devout Catholic and active member of AMVETS Post 22, Moose Lodge 169, the Eagles, Knights of Columbus Linwood Council 03505, and American Legion Post 225. Sunday beers at Post 22, spaghetti dinners at the Legion, or taco salads at Tipsy Cowboy - Jim enjoyed them all, but even more, he loved the company.
Jim married his best friend and true love, Agnes (Maxwell), in 1959 at St. Anne's Church. Their marriage was one of unwavering devotion - they were inseparable. Whether camping across the country in their RV, working side by side, or simply sitting quietly together, they were happiest in each other's company. Agnes passed away in 2009, but their love and partnership remain an example for all who knew them. Jim was a family man. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they lit up his world with every visit. He looked forward to seeing them more than anything and was always ready with a hug, a story, or a smart remark. Their visits gave him something to look forward to, and he cherished each one deeply.
Jim is survived by his children, Susan "Sue" (Pat) Gentle and Mark (Joann) Hitz; grandchildren Kurt Reinhardt, Kate (Scott) Phillips, Kris (Becky) Reinhardt, Steve Gentle, Jenny (Josh) Sampson, Patrick Gentle (preceded by beloved wife Hollie), and Brooke Hitz; great-grandchildren Sophie, Summer, Scottie, Vera "Half Pint," and Lily; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family who meant the world to him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes; parents Paul and Frieda Hitz; and all of his siblings: Marian (Marshall) Skrzypczak, Marcella (Stanley) Bleshinski, Betty Rugenstein, Paul (Delores) Hitz Jr., Ruth (Jerry) Gorney, Marjorie (Jerry) VonHolt, and Charlotte (Richard) Youngs.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Squires Funeral Home, 211 N. Henry Street,
Bay City, Mi 48706 from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM. The funeral service for Jim will then take place at 11:00 AM, officiated by Chaplain Ronald Compton. Burial with Army honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Kawkawlin. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Covenant Cooper CCU - especially Nurse Practitioner Kim with Advisecare, Nurse Dana, Dr. Rania Esteitie, and nephew Mike (a respiratory therapist) for their incredible care, honesty, and compassion.
