James Hoge Jr Obituary

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. James W. Hoge Jr., 81, a cherished father, decorated Vietnam Veteran and unwavering friend to all he met, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 28, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Mckees Rocks, Pennsylvania, James grew up with a spirit of service and resilience that would come to define his life. He served his country with pride and honor in the Army, earning the respect of his comrades through his dedication, strength, and kindness. His stories of camaraderie, sacrifice and duty were a source of wisdom and inspiration for all who knew him.

Outside of his military service, James also worked for Greenspace in the city of Elizabethtown. He was a devoted father who poured love, patience, and humor into every moment with his family. He taught by example. Showing what it meant to stand tall through adversity, loving deeply and never losing hope; even in the face of cancer.

Jame's warmth, wit and fierce loyalty will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

He is survived by loving wife of 60 years, Olga; four daughters, Marion Hughes, Sandra (Scott) Richards, Nicole (Jason) Kerr and Tanja (Keith) Merriman; 11 grandchildren and a great grandchild, with several bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy of courage, compassion and service will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Manakee Funeral Home on Leitchfield Road in Elizabethtown with Pastor Nathan Lowe officiating. Burial with military honors follows at 12:30 p.m. in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.

Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and continues from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Greenspace of Elizabethtown or any veteran organization.

Rest easy, Dad-you fought the good fight and we are so proud of you.
