James Hooker Obituary

Visit the Mothe Funeral Homes, LLC - Marrero website to view the full obituary.

James Edward Hooker, age 73, born August 1, 1952, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026, at his home in Waggaman, Louisiana.

James was born in Upland, California, and spent much of his childhood moving with his large family before settling into the rural farm life they loved. His father passed away when James was a teenager, an experience that shaped him deeply. He loved his mother, Dorothy Jane Hooker, known to most as “Granny”, and took pride in caring for her as she aged.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Hooker. He was the father of three sons: James Mooneyham and his wife Dana Mooneyham, Timothy Wayne Hooker, and Terry Hooker Lee and his wife Tatyana Lee. He is also survived by his grandchildren Josh Bond, Christian Bond, David Bond, Michael Lee, Noah Lee, and Maximilian Lee. He cherished Connie’s children Wayne Stone and Jennifer Austin as part of his extended family.

He is survived by his siblings Don Hooker and his wife Gail Hooker, and Becky Oswalt and her husband Earl Oswalt. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Phyllis Holifield, Dorothy Hall, Genevieve Hinze; by his nephews, Russell Hall, and Gene Chambless; and by his parents, Johnie Lee Hooker and Dorothy Jane Hooker.

He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He is also remembered by his longtime best friend, Brian Landry, whom he affectionately called his “other son.”

James worked hard throughout his life. He began as a mechanic, later spent many years as a welder at Avondale Shipyards, and eventually ran his own concrete business constructing driveways, sidewalks, and patios. Known locally as “The Concrete Doctor,” he took pride in doing honest, dependable work. He was a tremendous animal lover who raised and cared for many cats and dogs over the years. Conversations with him often included enthusiastic stories about his dogs and whatever they had done that day. He found real joy in those simple moments.

In his later years, James faced serious health challenges. Each time he received difficult news, he met it with strength and determination. He remained optimistic and refused to dwell on hardship, choosing instead to focus on living.

Above all, James fulfilled his responsibilities as a husband and father. He worked hard, provided for his family, and carried himself with resilience. He will be remembered for his work ethic, his love of animals, his strength in adversity, and the quiet determination that defined his life.

A service will be held at his home, 29 Sharen Place, Waggaman, Louisiana 70094, on Saturday, March 7th, 2026, at 11am.

He will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
