James Hughes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Marsh & Marsteller Funeral Home - Luckey on Mar. 3, 2026.
James Curtis Hughes, 89 of Luckey, OH, passed away at home Saturday, February 28, 2026. He was born October 15, 1936 to Willard and Maggie (Cook) Hughes in Louisa, KY. On March 30, 1954 he married Phyllis Moore in Vincent Branch KY. James and Phyllis raised two children and celebrated 65 years of marriage together, until Phyllis' passing in 2019.

Jim was a self-employed carpenter for 35 plus years, in addition he served as a local pastor, and did other ministerial duties for 33 and a half years. "Pastor Jim" as he was affectionately known loved sharing the word of God. His ministry work was most evident in his music and gospel singing. Be it the guitar, banjo, piano, keyboard or any other host of multiple instruments that he played. His love of music that was self-taught and gifted by ear, remained his lifelong passion. He also enjoyed ridding his Harley Davidson Trike and was often seen around town on his trike waving to children and his friends. Among Pastor Jim's enjoyments was taking care of his feline pal, a little black kitty named Onyx. His greatest joy remained spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

James is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. (Jeffery A. Hardy I) Herman of Luckey, grandchildren: Cassandra S. Hammersmith of Toledo, Tiffany L. (Steven) Bryant of Oregon, Matthew J. (Amy) Hall of TX, and Lisa Hartford of IL, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, brother, Michael (Mitzy) Hughes of Pemberville, and sister, Phyllis Jean. In addition to his wife Phyllis, James was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Loubertta Johnson, great-grandchild: Julianna, and 4 siblings.

Family and friends will be received 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2026 at the Marsh & Marsteller Funeral Home, 110 W. Main Street, Luckey. OH. A Funeral Services will begin at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Tyree, officiating. Interment will be in Troy Township Cemetery, Luckey.
