James Benjamin Irby, affectionately known as "Chunky," was born on February 12, 1947, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late James Irby and Lillie Bell Rice. He attended Florence Chapel High School and honorably served his country in the United States Army.
A man deeply connected to nature, James found great joy in fishing and nurturing his vegetable garden, showcasing his remarkable green thumb. His dedication to his community was evident as he became the neighborhood's trusted grass cutter. Above all, James was a devoted father and grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Ethel Irby Scott, and his sons, Adolphus Morrow and Joey B. Hutchinson.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories, survived by his sons, Shannon Evins of Wellford, SC and James Irby, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC; his daughters, Joanne Necole Irby of Greenville, SC and Jaime M. Hutchinson of Spartanburg, SC; his sister, Bessie Leake of Spartanburg, SC; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will continue to honor his memory.
On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, James transitioned at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
