James “Jim” Wesley Greer of Casper, Wyoming, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on June 5, 2024 at Central Wyoming Hospice surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born in Burke, South Dakota on May 24, 1937. Growing up, Jim, his brother, two sisters, and parents moved often, as his father worked in road construction. He graduated from Rawlins High School in 1956. He went on to attend the University of Sioux Falls from where he graduated in 1960. Following his passion for the Lord, he went on to seminary in Kansas City where he received a Master’s in Theology. After graduating in Kansas, Jim interned in Clarks Grove, Minnesota.
Jim’s formal education was just the beginning of a life dedicated to the pursuit of his faith. He then moved with his family to Anchorage, Alaska, where he took a position with the American Baptist Mission. This was followed by another Baptist Ministry position in Grangeville, Idaho, before returning to Rawlins and, eventually, to Casper. He continued to pastor at many churches in Wyoming throughout his life. He was a Methodist Minister in Casper and Upton, Wyoming. He was also involved in Prison Ministry in Riverton, Lusk, and Rawlins, and affectionately referred to the inmates as his “captive audience.” He spent 25 years doing Prison Ministry at the Women’s Prison in Lusk, Wyoming, where he touched many lives.
He was involved in Pop in the Shop, helping young boys and girls learn to care for their cars and donating cars to help those in need. He led a Men’s bible study at Highland Park Community Church for several years and also did bible studies at the Wyoming Rescue Mission. He worked other jobs throughout his life, mostly involving road and home construction, but his faith was his true vocation. His knowledge of the Bible was unmatched and he always jumped at the opportunity to share his faith. Jim loved the Lord, horses, hiking, cars, and helping others.
He was proceeded in death by his mother and father, Wes and Mary Greer; brother, Curtis Greer; and sister, Donna Greer Hicks. Jim is survived by his wife, Joni Greer; his sister, Sharon, and her husband, Steve Gunderson; his son, James W. Greer II, his wife Sue, and their son James W. Greer III, and his wife Ashley; his daughter, Ava, and her husband, Daran O’Hollearn; his son, Geno J. Greer; his stepsons, Brock, Jacob, Jacque, and Grant Finn; and many grandchildren.
