James “Jim” Durkin Long Sr., 88, passed away on November 2, 2025. He was born and raised in Akron, OH where he learned how to become a honorable man a true characteristic that was with him throughout his life. Jim attended East High School and was a competitive athlete. He was a cross-country runner, took 4th place in the state in wrestling and was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion. Jim heard the call of his nation and joined the United States Marine Corp and then went on to join the United States Army. Upon returning from his military service, he worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber for over 30years and eventually retired. When Jim wasn’t working, he enjoyed his family. He and Anna were married for 54years and had 3 children and 4 grandchildren that they adored. After Anna’s passing love found Jim again and he was united in friendship with Peggy Rawling. Peggy showed Jim love until the end. They enjoyed taking care of each other. Jim enjoyed meeting with the Arby’s coffee club, classic cars, cruising the town, vacations and traveling with family.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Anna; parents, Edward and Maycle Long; brother, Edward Ray (Lenora) Long; and many other family and friends.
To carry on his memory, are his children, Jim (Tracy) Long Jr., Tammy (Eddie) Meador, Joe “Shawn” Long; grandchildren, Zach Long, Hannah Long (Devon Gilkerson), Jonathan Meador, Connor Meador; and many nieces and nephews.
In leu of flowers and other remembrances please make donations to the charity of your choice.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 10am to 12pm with a funeral following at 12pm, at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. Burial to take place at Northlawn Memorial Garden immediately following the funeral service.
