James "Jim" McKenzie Obituary

Visit the Minor Funeral and Cremation Center website to view the full obituary.

James "Jim" McKenzie, a man who embodied dedication and love in all he did, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the University of Vermont Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born on March 18, 1956, in Burlington, Jim lived a life filled with passion for his family and a love for the great outdoors that defined him.

For many years, Jim devoted his talents and efforts to the family business, McKenzie Packing Company, where his strong work ethic and commitment were evident. He was known for his caring nature, always striving to ensure that his family's needs were met. This unwavering devotion was apparent to those who were fortunate enough to be close to him. Rather than seeking recognition, Jim poured his heart into his work and family simply because it felt right. His legacy of selflessness will be cherished by all who knew him.

Jim's vibrant personality was characterized by a sharp wit and an ability to tell captivating stories. He was a master of "colorful" language, that made him not only humorous but also unforgettable. His contagious laughter and joyful spirit could brighten any room, leaving behind memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of his loved ones.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Jim was an avid outdoorsman. From the moment the trails opened until they closed, he was there riding his Ski-Doo, showing the young guns how it was done. In the summer months, he could be found out on the lake or river, enjoying the waves and sun, frequently spending cherished moments with his friends and family at Thayer Beach.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Joyal; his children, David McKenzie and Samantha McKenzie (Shannon); and his adoring grandchildren, Zack, Sabrina, Ariel, and Sophia. Jim's loving sister, Ann Dewyea, and her partner, John Provencha, also carry his memory. He is also survived by a niece and several nephews each of whom had a special relationship with him and  also a sister in law Anne McKenzie.

He is predeceased by his parents, Mary Terrien and David McKenzie; his first wife, April Miller-McKenzie; as well as his brother Eddie, who was Killed In Action in Vietnam; and his siblings Mickey McKenzie and Jane McKenzie-Putzier.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jim's life during the visitation on November 28, 2025, from 5 PM to 7 PM at Minor Funeral and Cremation Center in Milton, VT. A Mass will be held the following day, November 29, 2025, at 11 AM at St. Ann Catholic Church in Milton, VT. A graveside service will take place on December 1, 2025, at 11 AM at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington, VT.

Jim McKenzie’s spirit will remain alive in the stories shared and the memories cherished by all who were fortunate to know him. His generous heart and spirited laughter will be deeply missed, leaving an indelible imprint on the lives he touched.
