James "Jimmy" Thompson Obituary

James “Jimmy” Clifton Thompson, 88, of Piedmont, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Born in Anderson County, SC, to the late C.A Thompson and Minnie Saxton Thompson.

Jimmy served his country in the United States Navy and was of Baptist faith and a dedicated member of Siloam Baptist Church for 36 years. He leaves behind a legacy etched in hard work and dedication

He retired as an engineer with AT&T and then serviced phones lines for the Greenville Hospital System.

A proud resident of his hometown, James was not just known for his diligent work ethic, but for his spirited passion for Clemson football and the Atlanta Braves baseball. He wore his allegiances with pride, often encouraging friends and family to gather around the television on game days, where laughter and spirited discussions filled the room. The joy that these moments brought to him reflected his love for connections especially with his grandson Andrew.

Among the many memories shared by those who knew him, James took particular pride in his cherished John Deere mower. For him, mowing the grass was not merely a chore but an art. It was an expression of care for his home and a way to cultivate the beauty of his surroundings, a reflection of the pride he took in all his endeavors.

In addition to his love for sports and yard work, James found solace in bass fishing, often spending quiet afternoons by the water, casting his line with hopes for the perfect catch. These moments were his escapes, where time seemed to stand still and nature intertwined with his soul. Moreover, his vegetable garden was another passion, one that yielded bountiful rewards and heartfelt recipes shared during family gatherings.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Audrey Durham Thompson; daughter, Tammy Thompson; grandson, Matthew Glenn and three sisters.

He is survived by daughter, Cheryl Thompson Williams (Vincent); three grandchildren, Mary Catherine Pendrey (Will), Michael James (Severn) and  Andrew Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Margaret, June and Caroline; brother, Wayne Thompson; sister-in-law, Pauline Sexton, and brother-in-law, William Durham.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 10:30 AM until 11:45 AM at Siloam Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM inside the church sanctuary. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Jimmy will be remembered not just for his accomplishments and hard work, but for the heart he shared with his family, church and friends. His legacy will continue to inspire those who look back on the moments spent with him, filled with laughter, stories, and a genuine appreciation for the beauty of life's simple pleasures.
