James J. Keeffe, age 87, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home in Lancaster, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 21, 1938, in Winona, Minnesota, the son of James H. and Sally Ann (Binczyk) Keeffe.

James graduated from Healy Memorial High School in Trempealeau in 1956. He continued his education at Winona State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960; that same year, James was united in marriage to Barbara J. Wood in Trempealeau. In 1961, James began his career at Lancaster High School, where he dedicated more than three decades to teaching before retiring in June 1997. During his tenure, he furthered his education by earning a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville.

Following retirement, James remained active by obtaining his CDL and driving for Richardson Trucking.

James was an exceptional educator who always placed his students first. He coached ninth-grade basketball for several years and took great pride in mentoring young people. He cherished summers spent traveling with his family, especially trips to Branson, Missouri with his grandchildren. A true hands-on learner, James even built a sailboat and sailed it with his children.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, and cheering on Wisconsin sports. A man of action with a lifelong love of learning, James was dedicated to serving others. He volunteered his time on the Christ Lutheran Church Board and with Boy Scout Troop 88, leaving a lasting impact on his community.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara; his children: James (Mary) of Columbus, and their children: Jacob (Parisa Mohgimi) Keeffe and Hannah (Jacob) Oxley and their children, Donna, Russell, and Susan; Kevin (Martha) of Lacrosse and their daughter Barrette (Ryan) Spies; Christine Keeffe of Lancaster; two sisters: Kathleen Phillipson of Hawaii and Sally Mae James of Trempealeau; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a sister, Michelle Martone and two brothers-in-law: Paul Phillipson and Roger “Jesse” James.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, 12:00 Noon at Christ Lutheran Church in Lancaster with Pastor Laura Jasiczek officiating. Family and friends may visit on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be given to the Lancaster Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 333, Lancaster, WI 53813, in memory of James J. Keeffe. Kramer-Grau Funeral Homes & Crematory in Lancaster is entrusted with his care.
