James Key Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scott's Chapel Hill Mortuary - Dothan on Jan. 1, 2026.
Mr. James Key of Dothan, Alabama departed this earthly life on Thursday, January 1, 2026.

James A. Key was born on September 15, 1951, to the late Leddie Key Adams and Willie M. Burks, both of whom preceded him in death. In 2013, James confessed Christ and became a faithful member of Faith Temple, where he served devotedly as Head Deacon. He is also preceded in death by one sibling, Marshall Jr. Adams.

He leaves to cherish and honor his memory; his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Versie Key, whose unwavering love, strength and companionship were a constant source of comfort throughout his life. He was a proud and dedicated father to two daughters, Joanna Gilbert (Veronica Gilbert) and Christina Key, whom he loved deeply and supported faithfully.

He was blessed with five grandchildren: Bernard Still, Zakoya Banks, a very special granddaughter who lovingly cared for him and stood by his side until the end; Miosyah Dennard, Madison Bans and Patricia Gilbert. His legacy continues through his seven cherished great-grandchildren, Serenity Still, Trevon Richards, Kaliya Johnson, Kason Johnson, Harmony Still, Priya Johnson who was especially dear to his heart and Bryson Still.

He is also survived by his loving siblings, including three sisters: Mary Frances Alexander of Louisville, AL; Joanna McRae of Louisville, AL., who also served as his Pastor and spiritual guide; and Barbara Harris of Phenix City, AL. He leaves behind five brothers: Jessie J. Key, Willie C. Burks (Lavonia) and Bruce Burks (Marilyn) all of Louisville, AL; Earnest Adams (Sharon) of Eufaula, AL and Thomas (Sheila) of Clayton, AL. Also, he leaves a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
