James Bracklin Kizer, 89, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, in Seattle, Washington. A lifelong resident of the city he loved, James-affectionately known to many as "Captain Jim"-lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to family, engineering excellence, and a deep connection to the waters of Puget Sound.
Born on February 25, 1936, in Seattle, James was a proud graduate of Seattle Prep. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Business and Engineering from the University of Washington, laying the foundation for a distinguished career that would span decades.
James served his country in the Navy Reserves before embarking on a long and accomplished tenure at Boeing. As a flight test engineer on the 757 program, he played an integral role in one of the company's most iconic aircraft. His work reflected not only technical expertise but also a passion for aviation that remained with him throughout his life.
Outside of his professional achievements, James was known for his love of boating. Whether navigating the waters around Puget Sound or hosting friends and family aboard his boat, he found joy in sharing these experiences with others. His cruises were legendary among Boeing colleagues and loved ones alike-always filled with laughter, storytelling, and camaraderie. He had a special fondness for watching the Blue Angels soar overhead and attending hydroplane races along Lake Washington. Fishing trips were another favorite pastime that brought him peace and pleasure.
James made his home at Alki in West Seattle, where he cherished his sweeping view of Puget Sound. It was here that he welcomed countless gatherings over the years-his home serving as both sanctuary and celebration space. Known as "the life of the party," Captain Jim brought warmth and humor wherever he went.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Lisa Cook; son Steve Kizer and wife Karla; grandchildren Daniel Brown (wife Phinney), Jenn Gibbs, Luke Kizer, Tanner Scott (wife Stephanie), and Alexis Peterson (husband Cooper); great-grandchildren Ayrton Brown, Saylor Kizer, and Judson Peterson; and lifelong family friend Tony Smith. James was preceded in death by his beloved son Donald Kizer and son-in-law Rick Cook.
A devout Catholic throughout his life, James carried his faith quietly but steadfastly. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched-with each story shared over calm waters or under blue skies serving as a tribute to the man who lived them so fully.
May Captain Jim's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and joy to those who remember him best out on the water. A Graveside Service will be held on September 10, 2025, at 11:30 AM at GAR Cemetery, 8601 Riverview Road, Snohomish, WA 98290
