James was preceded in passing by his wife, Norma, of 30+ years; parents, Ralph Knipfer and Jane Gibney; daughter, Wendy Knipfer; step-parents, Dorothy Knipfer and Kenny Gibney.
James is survived by his daughters, Sarah (Dustin) Carl; Dawn (Rocky) Geary and family; special grandchild, Natalie Carl; significant other, Colleen Davey and extended family; siblings, Gretchen Gibney and Gina (Pam) Gibney; sister-in-law, Susan Baker.
After many years in the Navy, HM1 Knipfer loved the outdoors, specifically hunting with his father-in-law, fishing and travelling, especially to Shenandoah, one of his favorite places. A skilled woodworker, he took pride in creating with his hands and sharing his craftsmanship with others. He had a special love for Christmas, when he and his daughter, Sarah, would make hard rock candy together. In later years, James found peace in the quiet moments, sitting with a cup of coffee, watching deer out on the lake and telling his humorous stories from the past. James will be remembered by his humor, love of his family, and the ability to find joy in the big and small moments.
To honor James's life, a graveside service will be held at Roseland Memorial Gardens on Saturday, November 15, 2025 beginning at 1:00pm. Please visit www.hamptonfuneralhomes.com to sign the guestbook and/or send a condolence to the family.
