James Koster, age 78, of Breda, died Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, Iowa.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2024 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda. The celebrant will be Fr. Terry Roder. Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard Choir. Lector will be Sarah Strong. Gift Bearers will be Amy Jo Dillard and Paula Winkel. Eucharistic Minister Dave Grote. Casket Bearers will be David Koster, Paul Koster, Rob Winkel, Chris Koster, Kevin Koster, and John Schwartzkopf. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll from 5-7 p.m. on Friday. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Bernard's Church on Saturday morning where visitation will resume from 9-9:45 a.m.
Memorials may be directed to St. Bernard's Cemetery Fund c/o Good Shepherd Parish.
Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, and online condolences may be left for James' family at www.sharpfuneral.com.
James, the son of Walter and Viola (Reising) Koster was born on February 21, 1945 in Carroll, Iowa. He grew up near Breda and attended St. Bernard's School. Jim spent his entire life in the Breda community. He helped his parents on the farm and worked as a day laborer. Jim would later move into Breda where he remained until moving to Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.
Jim enjoyed volunteering for St. Bernard's Parish and the Breda community. He was active at St. Bernard's Church as an usher. He enjoyed socializing at morning coffee. Jim loved sports especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and later the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, going places, walking the Sauk Rail Trail, and gardening.
James is survived by his sibings: Allen (Joyce) Koster of Dubuque, Mary Kay Koster of Carroll, John (Ione) Koster of Breda, Marcia (Dean) Kollasch of Bentonville, AR; nine nieces and nephews; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Viola Koster, and a great-nephew, Christopher Kollasch.
