Memphis, Tenn.—James Lee “Jim” Long Jr. passed away Monday, April 14, 2025 at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis. He was 64 years old. A Tupelo Native, Jim was born September 29, 1960 to James Lee Long Sr. and Betty Cobb Long. He was a true patriot, serving in the United States Army for four years as an heavy weapons Infantryman serving in the 5th Infantry Division, 4th Infantry Division, culminating as a noncommissioned officer in the 2nd infantry, division, security forces, Demilitarized zone, South Korea. During Operation Desert Storm Jim Continue to serve in the National Guard assigned to the 20th Special Forces group. His military accomplishments included Army achievement medal, army accommodation medal, overseas service ribbon, good conduct medal, expert infantrymen badge, and airborne school. Following his military career, Jim continued to serve veterans, moving to Memphis where he worked as a security guard at a VA complex designed especially for Veterans. He had an enthusiastic love for music and was quite talented as a guitarist. Jim also loved the open road, riding his prized Harley Davidson.
Jim leaves behind his son, James Lee “Jay” Long III of Tupelo; two grandsons, Preston and Gabriel; two brothers, Larry Long (Suzanne) of Saltillo and Tony Long of Tupelo and his aunt, Alayne LaValley (Ken) of Brunswick, Georgia. and many loving cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Scott Long.
Visitation will be 1 until 2 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2025 at East Main Church of Christ. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tupelo Memorial Park. Pegues Funeral Directors has been entrusted with the arrangements.
