James Lanier Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by W. L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home - Ft. Oglethorpe Chapel on Dec. 9, 2025.
James Logan Lanier

July 27, 1955 – December 8, 2025

James Logan Lanier, 70, of Chickamauga, Georgia, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025. Logan was born on July 27, 1955, to the late James and Elizabeth Lanier in Baumholder, Germany. He was part of a military family, and when he was able, he joined and served in the United States Army. Logan was one of our great American heroes. After his time in the Army, Logan worked for thirty-four years at the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he served as the Warden at several state prisons, including Walker State Prison in Rock Spring, Georgia. In his early years, he enjoyed woodworking and building things with his hands and he was a Mason. He was a proud Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Falcons fan. He always enjoyed watching them play. Logan was a brilliant man of integrity and character. If he said it, he meant it. He treated everyone equally and with kindness and compassion. Most of all, Logan was a godly man who loved the Lord and his family. He was a fantastic husband, father, and grandfather, and he enjoyed every moment he spent with his family. Logan was dearly loved by his family and all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Logan was preceded in death by his parents, James Calvin and Elizabeth Doris Lanier, and his brothers, Daniel Lanier and William Lanier.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Tina Kirby Lanier; children, Catessa (Jason) Vines of Chickamauga, Georgia, Casey (Justin) Newsome of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Kacey (Lee) House of Sitka, AK; sister, Gladys Newman of Statesboro, Georgia; grandchildren, Caleb Mangrum, Trinity Holland, Kairi Newsome, Jameson Newsome; and several nieces and nephews.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join us in remembering and honoring Logan on Monday, December 15, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, December 16, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. Following the funeral service we will proceed to Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee for a 2:00 p.m. burial. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
