James Clyde LaPointe, a veteran of the Vietnam war and longtime resident of Port St. Lucie FL, passed away on September 26, 2023 in his home.
Jim, as he was known to many in the area, was born May 31, 1947 in Germany where his father was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army. Jim and his family returned to the U.S. in 1958 and he graduated from high school right before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1964 at the age of 17.
The U.S. Army recognized Jim for his honorable service with a Bronze Star, specifically for his heroic action in the Vietnam War where he served as a Tunnel Rat in the 1st Cavalry Division. He was wounded in combat multiple times and received three Purple Heart awards. Additionally, he was awarded the Air medal, Army Commendation medal, National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal. As a highly decorated war hero, Jim proudly marched in many parades and ceremonies with other veterans and was active in the VVA chapter 566 and the VFW.
He was a beloved father and treasured friend and will be deeply missed.
His family has organized a memorial service to honor Jim's life and military service which will be held at the South Florida National Cemetery on November 10, 2023 at 12:30 pm.
