Dr. Eugene Joseph Vinciguerra, 92, of
Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed away on August 31, 2025.
Born in New York on March 15, 1933, to the late Lillian Perillo and Italian immigrant Eugene
Vinciguerra Sr., Eugene's life was shaped by the vibrant energy of New York, a deep love for
music and his family, and a dedication to science and service.
A proud graduate of Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, Eugene went on to earn his Bachelor's
degree in Physics from New York University in 1954. His passion for science led him to further
his studies, obtaining a Master's in Radiological Health in 1962 and a Doctor of Science in
Medical Engineering from Indiana University in 1974.
Eugene's illustrious career spanned several decades and included pivotal roles in the field of
nuclear medicine. His work as a physicist and radiation specialist helped advance the field, most
notably at Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute, where his career began calibrating radiation
therapy machines used in the fight against cancer. He held senior roles at several prominent
hospitals and universities, including Bellevue Hospital and New York Medical College where his
contributions to radiology and research were groundbreaking. In addition to his work as a
scientist, Eugene was an educator and a mentor. He inspired generations of students at New York
University Medical Center and New York Medical College.
His leadership extended beyond
academia: he served as the Executive Director of the American College of Nuclear Medicine and
President of the Institute of Allied Medical Professions. His tireless efforts to advance the field
were matched only by his commitment to his patients, colleagues, and the community.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Eugene was a man of profound love and generosity.
He deeply loved his country, believing in the values of service, responsibility, and community.
He volunteered with the Coral Springs Police Department for over 15 years, earning recognition
for his service. He also appreciated and had great affection for animals, especially dogs. He
spoke of their loyalty and gentleness, often saying with sincerity, "God bless dogs," and animals
were always part of the warmth and joy of his home. Most notably, his love for his family was
boundless. He met Joan, the woman who would become his partner and soul mate, in 1979. They
were married on August 17, 1985 and moved to Florida shortly after. Together, they created a
home filled with warmth, laughter, and support for their two children and Eugene's six older
children, who were always welcomed. Eugene was a devoted father and grandfather, happily
engaging family as well as neighbors and friends with open arms and a helping hand.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan Vinciguerra; his children, Gina Iannucci (Frank), Lisa O'Dougherty (Tom, deceased), Lori Menzies (David), Carol
Brown ( John), John Vinciguerra (Leighann), Helen Scibilia (Angelo),
Paul Vinciguerra, and Elise Vinciguerra; and his cherished grandchildren Lucien, Marcel, Arielle,
Kyle, Kristen, Megan, Isabella, Arianna, Emelina, Liliana, Christopher John, Gregory
(2000-2023), Christopher, Cora, John Joseph, Josephine, Carlo, Giuseppe, Francesca, and
Angelina, along with many nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his
sister, Josephine Tufariello.
Eugene's life was one of distinction, compassion, and unwavering love for his family,
community, and country. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments as a scientist and leader in the field of nuclear medicine, but also for his warmth, wisdom and his favorite expression, "Cent' anni"-a wish to everyone for a long, joyful life. His legacy will live on in
the many lives he so deeply touched.
