LANCASTER, SC ~ Mr. James Robert Layfield, age 95, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, January 3, 2026, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. He was born on November 17, 1930, in Clarksburg WV, son of the late James Emory and Cora Mae Layfield of Shinnston WV. He also was the grandson of Emmet and Emma Goldsmith of Clarksburg, WV.

He is a graduate of the high School Class of 1950 located in Shinnston WV. He and his wife Janet have been living in SC for the last 22 years. Bob retired from Mathew Brothers in Anmoore, WV in 1994. And had worked previously for Clarksburg Drug and Craig Motor Company, both in Clarksburg, WV.

He enjoyed old westerns, and Tarzan, as well as the Statler Brothers. He loved woodworking and truly was a jack of all trades. He was always there to lift family members and help enrich their lives. He also was known in his family as the dad with left-handed hammers.

Mr. Layfield is survived by his devoted wife of 73 years, Janet Sue Layfield ,89, of Lancaster SC, and their 2 sons Bruce T and Jeffery K Layfield, ages 72 and 63, their wives Sue and Stephanie Layfield, as well as his grandchildren Matthew K and Jonathan T Layfield, and Jonathan's wife Taylor. Bruce and his family reside in Conway SC and Ft Mill SC. Jeff and his wife reside in Lowell, NC.

Bob was preceded in death by his brother Wayne A Layfield of MD, sister Emogene Layfield of Ohio and niece Dawn Layfield also of MD.

Bob's legacy of love, laughter, and resourcefulness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.

The celebration of life for Mr. Layfield will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 11th, 2026 at The Chapel of Burgess, in Lancaster SC, with immediate family. The service will be provided by Pastor Tim Espar.
