Visitation will be held from 3:30PM to 6:30PM prior to funeral services on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Frary Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Oswegatchie Mausoleum at the convenience of the family. Mr. Layng passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2024, with his family by his side.
Bob is survived by two sons, Robert (Lenore) Layng, Jr. and David (Cynthia) Layng; two daughters, Kristine (Matthew) Weber and Kathleen Layng; his brother Donald (Ruth) Layng and his sister Vicki Swinden; five grandchildren, Sheena (Mark) Peabody, Andrew (Brooke) Layng, Miles Layng, Katie (Michael) Gibson, and Hailey Weber; and three great-grandchildren, Wylyn and Ellie Peabody, and Kason Layng. He is predeceased by his parents, brother (Richard) and sisters (Myrna Mae Layng and Carol Lemieux).
Bob was born on July 23, 1943, in Ogdensburg, NY, the son of Herbert W. and Amy (Worden) Layng. He was a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, class of 1961. On July 17, 1965, he married Davalene A. Sharpe at St. Mary's Church in Waddington, NY. She predeceased him on October 11, 2019.
Bob had an amazing work ethic and kept working every day of his life. First, as a young boy on the family farm and later at Alcoa and Kodak. In 1967, he found his calling in law enforcement, proudly serving with the New York State Police for 20 years, retiring in 1987. In 1979, with his wife, he opened Austin-Layng Glass & Radiator shop, Inc. Together, they grew their family business, benefiting from Bobs entrepreneurial thinking being balanced by Davalene's pragmatic nature.
Bob enjoyed classic cars, finding a good deal, and Keno.
