James Luyster Obituary

James Joseph Luyster, affectionately known as Jim, was a man of remarkable intellect and spirit who left a positive, indelible mark on this world. Born on June 1, 1929, in Canton, Ohio, to proud parents Leroy and Mary (nee: Coletti) Luyster, Jim's journey through life has been one of steadfast dedication, love, and achievement. On November 8, 2025, surrounded by the warmth of his home in Painesville Twp., Jim passed away at the venerable age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and service.
A devoted husband, Jim was married to the love of his life, Marlene (nee: Skinner), for an extraordinary 66 years. Together they nurtured a family that includes Russell (Mindy) Luyster, Curtis (Kim) Luyster, Loretta Luyster, Bradley (Angie) Luyster, and Theresa (Jack) Gage. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Victoria (Dan) Sinclair, Chelsea (Michael) Recht, Sydney (Nate) Mazucca, Kelsey (Casey) Barbour, Paige (Timo) Bolos, Emily Gage, and Nicholas Gage, and was a doting great-grandfather to Owen, Payton, Abigail, Juni, Bruin, and Olive. Though he was preceded in death by his son Kenneth, grandson Brady Koon; brother Ronald (Nancy) Luyster; and cousin, Frank (Carman Harbisan) Coletti, the memories and lessons he imparted remain a treasure to all who knew him.
Jim was an Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. His thirst for knowledge led him to earn a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from The Ohio State University and a Master's degree in Business Administration from Kent State University. His education was the foundation for a commendable career as a dedicated Industrial Engineer and Manager at Hoover Co. for 41 years. Jim's exceptional work ethic and leadership were admired and respected by colleagues and a source of inspiration for many.
Jim's zest for life extended beyond his professional commitments. He was an enthusiastic sportsman, enjoying golf well until he was 90 and was actively involved in other sports. He had a passion for playing poker, bridge, and bowling, and was previously a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. His love for life was contagious, and his intelligent approach to every endeavor was greatly admired.
A memorial service will be held on December 13, 2025 at 6:00pm at Pilgrim Lutheran Brethren Church, 9514 Johnnycake Ridge Rd., Mentor, Ohio 44060 with a dinner to follow at 7:00pm.

What a special person who I enjoyed working with at The Hoover Company. My husband, Roger, shared many stories and golf outings with him. Hopefully, they'll find each other in heaven.
