It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of James W. MacDonald, 81, of Shrewsbury, on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Webster, MA, surrounded by loved ones.
James is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Kathleen (Driscoll) MacDonald of Shrewsbury; his loving children, Scott MacDonald and wife Nancy, Marc MacDonald, and wife Nancy and Tamara MacDonald. He is also survived by his eight loving grandchildren who adored their “Papa”: Michael MacDonald, Annya (MacDonald) Blanchette, Shelby Leger, Sean MacDonald, Dan MacDonald, Connor MacDonald, Tucker Leger, Aidan MacDonald, and his great granddaughter Harper MacDonald.
He also leaves his cherished sister Shelly Barry and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
James was born in Waltham on February 12, 1944. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Anne (Dorian) MacDonald and sister Patricia Kenney.
James was a Vietnam Marine Veteran achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. In his years in the Marines, James was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Combat Action Ribbon, and the prestigious Presidential Unit Citation.
After his time in the military, James trained to become an electrician, first earning his Journeyman Electrician license and then obtaining his Master Electrician license. He worked as a Facilities Manager at two major corporations.
James adored his family and provided for them in so many ways. He loved attending all his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He was a gentle and silent soul who took immense pride in his family, leading and supporting them with strength, humility, and a warm sense of humor.
Words cannot describe how much James will be missed.
Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester from 10:30a.m. until 11:30a.m. at which time his Memorial Service will begin. Interment will immediately follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James’ memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
