Ray Funeral Services - Three RiversJames Charles Mais, age 43, of Marcellus, Michigan, passed away at his home on February 19, 2026, following an unexpected diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer.
James was born on August 16, 1982, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Dale and Ellen (Barrell) Mais. At the age of one, his family moved to South Carolina for his father’s work. It was there, along the ocean shores, that James’ lifelong love of water began. As a young boy, he delighted in catching crabs and exploring the coastline, already showing the curiosity and wonder that would define his life.
The family later moved to Roachdale, Indiana, where James experienced the beauty and freedom of farm life. He spent countless hours outdoors, forming a deep bond with nature. During those Indiana years, the family endured a terrifying tornado. Rather than instill fear, the storm sparked in James a fascination with weather that would remain with him for the rest of his life. He later pursued this passion academically, earning his Associate’s degree from Palomar College in California, concentrating in weather science.
When the family relocated to Valley Center, California, they lived in an orange grove. Surrounded by groves, rocks, and open skies, James’ love of the natural world flourished. He developed a keen interest in rocks and geodes, weather patterns, and the intricate ways the earth shapes itself. He was endlessly curious about how and why the world works as it does.
One of James’ most cherished places was Three Mile Lake in Paw Paw, Michigan. There, he found solace on the water, fishing for bluegill and simply being one with nature. He treasured evenings by the bonfire with friends, the quiet ripple of the lake, and the peace it brought him.
James was known and loved for his humor, kindness, and sharp wit. He was a patient listener and was naturally drawn to creative souls. He himself was creative—he painted, drew, and took pride in his impressive cactus collection. He learned to cook all of his mother’s meals so he could share them with friends and was always eager to try foods from different cultures. He loved lying in the yard under the night sky, watching the stars and especially the Aurora Borealis during his time in California.
A happy and content person, James brought his sister along on many of his outdoor adventures—whether fishing, exploring, or simply sitting around a bonfire. His gentle spirit and steady presence made others feel welcome and understood.
James worked for The Home Depot at various locations throughout Michigan and most recently was employed by AEP. He formed many friendships throughout his career and was valued for his work ethic and easygoing nature.
He is survived by his loving parents, Dale and Ellen Mais; his sister, Maryellen (Brian) Fleming of Valley Center, California; his beloved niece, Willow and nephew Kaia Fleming; Aunt Lorraine (Craig) Fischer of South Bend, Indiana; Uncle Jim Fahey of Mishawaka, Indiana; Aunt Beth (Tom) Swinford of Smithfield, Utah; Aunt Carol Barrell of Columbia City, Indiana; cousins Stephanie, Sarah, Aubrey, Bryan, Chris, Danielle and Geoff; and a multitude of dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Maryann Barrell and Rollin and Violet Mais; Aunt Laura Fahey; and Uncle Mike Barrell.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on March 7, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Ray Funeral Services, 305 Rock River Ave., Three Rivers, Michigan 49093. A time of sharing will begin at 2:00 PM.
James will be remembered for his deep love of nature, his creative spirit, his curiosity about the world, and the kindness he showed to everyone he met. His presence was a steady light—like the stars he so loved to watch—and he will be deeply missed.
