Ethel Mae Heuman Mais, age 105, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2025. She was born August 26, 1920, in Galveston, Texas to Edith and C. H. (Howard) Heuman, Sr. and lived in Galveston all her life. Ethel attended San Jacinto Elementary School and was a 1936 graduate of Ball High School.

She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 64½ years, Harry Mais; her daughter, Bunny Mais; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. C. H. Heuman, Sr.; sisters, Edith Cannon, Lillian Duncanson, Gertrude Kirschner, Mildred Mantzel; and brothers, Charles Howard Heuman, Jr. and W. T. Heuman, Sr.

A devoted and loving wife and mother, she is survived by her daughter, Harriet Marie "Pet" Pittman (Ed); granddaughters, Angele Mohr of New York, Patty Brady of North Carolina and Alissa Szucs of Houston, TX; as well as numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two Godchildren, "Bitsy" Ganter of League City, Texas and "Beth" O'Malley of Eads, Tennessee, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She attended St. Patrick Catholic Church. Although she was not an active member of any parish organizations, she did not hesitate to support any and all parish and Catholic organizations.

Ethel served as Legal Secretary to Frank S. Anderson, General Counsel for Moody Interests from 1936 to 1941. She was also the Secretary to Director of Construction, United States Engineers, during World War II from 1942 to 1945. She became a stay-at-home wife and mother from 1945 to mid-1969 when she resumed her secretarial career as legal Secretary to Ben Powel and Administrative Supervisor at the law firm of McLeod, Alexander, Powel & Apffel, retiring October 1, 1984.

She was most proud of her husband and family. She enjoyed good music and loved to dance, especially with her husband. She took great pleasure in feeding the birds and small animals, valued walks on the beach and loved gardening.

She had a special place in her heart for the Ursuline nuns who taught her two daughters at Ursuline Academy and valued her honorary membership in the Ursuline Alumnae. She was a generous and giving person, especially to her family.

Words cannot express our love for and devotion to our mother. She was an inspiration and example to her family, always there for them regardless of circumstances. Her cherished collection of angel figurines has now been exchanged for her own earned angel wings in the company of heavenly angels.

Ethel's family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 11, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A rosary will begin at 11:00 am with a memorial mass immediately following.

Memorials may be sent to Holy Family Parish Preservation Fund, 1525 25th Street, Galveston, Texas 77550, or to Ursuline Alumnae Association, c/o Alicia Lemelle, 7009 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX 77563, or to Meals on Wheels 2803 Mary Moody Northern Blvd., Galveston, Texas 77551 or charity of your choice.
