James Maloney
Columbia - A Catholic Funeral Mass for James Matthew Maloney, 71, will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Father Richard Harris and Father Patrick Stenson will officiate. Pallbearers will be Reid Banks, Joe Bouknight, Perrin Dargan, Lee Floyd and Mitch Wells. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday and immediately following the service at 3920 Kenilworth Road.
Mr. Maloney died October 16, 2009. Born October 21, 1937, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was a son of the late Diana Marie and John Joseph Maloney. He graduated with honors from St. John’s High School in Concord, N.H., where he was a star athlete, lettering in three sports. He went on to attend his beloved alma mater, Providence College, where he lettered in baseball and graduated with honors. He was recognized by Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities.
Upon graduation, Mr. Maloney began his illustrious career in the insurance industry with Aetna in Providence, R.I., Hartford, CT, and Charlotte, N.C. Upon joining the Furman Agency of South Carolina, he made Columbia his home. In 1977, Marsh & McLennan, a national surety brokers firm, acquired The Furman Company and Mr. Maloney served as head of office, Managing Director and Chairman of the worldwide construction and surety practice. In 1993, Mr. Maloney joined Willis as Deputy Chairman of Willis Construction Practice Group with overall responsibility for surety operations. He had over 40 years of surety and bonding experience.
Mr. Maloney served as President of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers, President of the South Carolina Transportation Policy and Research Council, Chairman of the National AGC Service/Supplier Providers Council and Co-Chair on the Salem College Parent Advisory Council. He prided himself on serving the Columbia community in many ways. Various boards included United Way of the Midlands, Columbia YMCA, St. Joseph Catholic Church Finance Committee, Central Carolina Community Foundation and various financial institutions.
Mr. Maloney was a member of The Summit Club, where he served as President. He was also a member of Forest Lake Country Club, The Palmetto Club, The Camellia Ball and Reserve Golf Club at Pawley’s Island.
Mr. Maloney, a devout Catholic, dedicated himself to Providence Hospital, serving on the founding board and as Chairman for several terms. Mr. Maloney deeply loved the Sisters of Charity St. Augustine and was proud to be a part of their governing board.
The Risk and Insurance Report is an annual listing of the most influential commercial insurance brokers in 27 industry practice groups. In 2007, he was awarded “Power Broker� for the Construction/Design category. He was highly respected in the surety industry, and a mentor to many of his colleagues. He was extremely well-known for his passion, integrity and competitive spirit.
Mr. Maloney co-authored “Construction Insurance, Bonding and Risk Management� for McGraw-Hill.
Mr. Maloney spent many years coaching the St. Joseph inter-faith league basketball team and won many tournaments, including the Catholic State Championship. He loved coaching and influenced many youth over the years. He passed his love of sports on to his children and grandchildren and was active in their athletic endeavors.
An avid supporter of the Gamecock Club for over 30 years, he enjoyed attending all Gamecock athletic events with his family.
Mr. Maloney enjoyed golfing with friends. He loved to travel and was able to visit many parts of the world. However, his favorite place was Litchfield Beach, where he loved walking to The Point, collect shells, ride the surf and be with his family.
He was a devoted husband, loving father, beloved grandfather and friend to many.
Mr. Maloney is survived by his wife, Claudia; daughters and sons-in-law, Kelley and Randy Liggitt of Columbia, Melanie and Ken Fulton of Charleston; son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Laurie Maloney of Greenville, N.C.; grandchildren, Kent and Kate Liggitt; stepsons, Scott Harmon and his wife, Leslie, and their children, Emily Grace, Luke and Olivia, of Little Mountain, Mark Harmon of Travelers Rest; brother, Robert John Maloney and his wife, Charlotte, of Lexington. He was predeceased by his Golden Retriever, Brandy, and, more recently, by his beloved cat, Boots.
