James L. "Jimmy" Mason, age 77, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 9, 2024. He was born on April 8, 1947, in Emanuel County to James B. and Emily Riner Mason and had lived in Swainsboro for many years before moving to Shellman Bluff 35 years ago.
Jimmy's journey began when he graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1965. He furthered his education at Georgia Military College, Georgia Southern University, and Brewton Parker College. His commitment to serving his country was evident as he proudly served in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Captain. This chapter of his life highlighted his strong values and leadership skills, which he carried into every aspect of his life.
In the years that followed, Jimmy's professional life thrived as he owned and operated Mason Portable Buildings and Mason Fishing Charters. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his deep-rooted love for fishing. Over four decades, he competed in fishing tournaments, earning recognition as a former Georgia Senior Angler with the SKA. His passion for fishing extended beyond competition; it was a cherished hobby that allowed him to connect with nature and enjoy the company of friends and family. Jimmy's role as President and board member of the Sapelo Saltwater Fishing Club illustrated his commitment to fostering a community centered around this beloved pastime. He was a member of Swainsboro First Baptist Church and attended Shellman Bluff Baptist Church. Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents.
But beyond his accomplishments and hobbies, it was Jimmy's family that brought him the greatest joy. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary Evelyn "Mamie" Mason of Shellman Bluff; his sons and daughters in law, Jim and Audra Mason of Mitchell, GA, and Tim and Stefanie Mason of Swainsboro; his grandchildren—Wess (Mary) Mason of Shellman Bluff, Calissa Mason, Emma Mason of Swainsboro, and Ashton Mason of Mitchell; great grandchildren, Caleb Mason and Laurie James Mason; his brothers, Bobby Mason and Bill Mason both of Swainsboro; several nieces and nephews
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 12, 2024, beginning at 1:00pm with the funeral services to follow at 2:00pm at the Shellman Bluff Baptist Church with Reverend Harry Coursey officiating.
