James Matlock Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium on Feb. 20, 2026.
James Miller "Jimmy" Matlock Sr., 59, of Sumter, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at McLeod Health in Florence SC.

Born November 26, 1966, he was the son of Vernon Leroy Matlock and the late Gloria Gertrude Matlock. He was also a beloved son-in-law of the late J.K. Barrineau and cherished by his mother-in-law, JoAnn Barrineau.

Jimmy was a devoted husband, a proud father, and the most loving "Papa" to his grandboys, who were truly his world. Nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with his family - whether it was sharing stories or simply sitting together at home. His love for his wife and children was steady and unwavering, and his grandchildren carried his whole heart.

He was a master carpenter and the successful business owner of Dream Builders for many years, taking great pride in his craftsmanship and the work of his hands.

He was a faithful servant of the Lord and lived his life grounded in his faith and loving his family.

He loved watching South Carolina football and enjoyed spending time at the produce stand where he made many friends who quickly became like family. He truly cherished interacting with others and serving his community.

Jimmy also had a special place in his heart for his dog and his granddogs, who were constant companions and brought him endless happiness.

He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his big heart, his steadfast faith, and his deep love of family. His presence will be deeply missed, but the legacy of his love and devotion will live on in the lives of his family and all who were blessed to know him.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Tabitha Barrineau Matlock; two children, James Miller Matlock Jr. "Jamie" (Shelly) and Lauren Matlock Taylor (Burrell); and three grandchildren, James "Wesley" Matlock, Austin Blake Matlock, and John-Thomas Taylor; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Monday, February 23, 2026, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. Eugene Moiser.

Pallbearers will be Bill Friel, Billy Geddings, Jr., Maynard Dorr, Rick Johnson, C.D. Surratt, Joey Anderson, and Ryan Conyers.

Honorary pallbearer will be James Deaton.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at their home, 1933 Bishop Dr. Sumter, SC 29153.

The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14
