James Charles McClain, also known as "Mac", was born January 21, 1950, to Lawrence Joseph McClain Sr. and Ruther "Ruth" Mickles McClain in
Mobile, Alabama. James passed away on March 6, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
One of seven children, Mac was raised in a very close-knit home and grew up in Prichard, Alabama, where he attended school, made lifelong friendships, and began going to church at an early age.
Faith, hard work, and family loyalty shaped the foundation of his character. He was a member of the marching band and a proud graduate of Mattie T. Blount High School in Prichard, Alabama and it was during that time he was introduced to the love of his life Deborah Ann Gibbs. After years together, they married on May 29, 1973. James earned his Accounting degree from Dillard University, an achievement that opened the door to a long and dedicated professional career.
James and Deborah left the familiarity of home and moved to
College Park, GA to settle down and start their life together. James worked in several places throughout his life, but spent the majority of his career with the City of Atlanta, where he served in management and was respectfully known as "Mr. McClain". He served with commitment, steadiness, and integrity until his retirement in 2011.
James was the proud father of three children - Michelle Coleman, Jermaine McClain and Devin McClain and five grandchildren Maya McClain, Kennedy Coleman, Jalen Coleman, Dylan McClain, and Nico McClain.
James was a longtime resident of College Park and Austell, Georgia. While living in Austell, much like in his childhood, he grew in his faith and became a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. For the past eight years he made his home in
Buford, Georgia, where he enjoyed retirement with his devoted wife, Deborah. He found joy in staying busy with house projects, some travel, spending time with family and grandchildren, and most importantly spending time with his wife doing what they loved - watching TV.
Throughout his life, he was known for his strength, generosity, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved. He built his legacy not through grand gestures, but through the steady, consistent way he showed up for others, always with humility, integrity, and a full heart.
He believed deeply in earning what you have, loving your family fiercely, and carrying yourself with dignity. He found joy in simple things and loved teaching those around him. He was a storyteller at heart, and his unforgettable voice and laugh could fill any room. Though he rarely asked for help, he gave of himself freely and was always ready to support family and friends whenever they needed him. He was the example of what it meant to be a good man - loving, responsible, steady, and honorable. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His life, values, and love will continue to live on in the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched.
Family and Relationships
James shared nearly 53 years of marriage with the love of his life, Deborah McClain, a partnership marked by loyalty, devotion, and deep affection. His love for Deborah was a living example of how a man should honor and care for his wife.
He was a devoted father to Jermaine McClain, Devin McClain, and Michelle Coleman, guiding each of them with quiet wisdom, patience, and love. His greatest joy came from being a grandfather to Maya McClain, Kennedy Coleman, Jalen Coleman, Dylan McClain, and Nico McClain, and he took immense pride in watching them grow and carry forward the values he lived by. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law, Rebecca McClain and Nadiene McClain, whom he loved as part of his family.
