James Cecil McDaniel, affectionately known as "Jim", passed away on August 25, 2023 at the age of 81 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was born on May 12, 1942 to parents Cecil and Odessa Mitchell McDaniel in Opp, Alabama. Jim attended Albany High School prior to graduating with his Masters from Florida State University where he minored in music and majored in mathematics. He was also a member of their Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Later, Jim joined the Peace Corps as well as the United States Coast Guard Reserves. He taught high school classes for several years before becoming a broadcast engineer; first at WCTV and then WFSU. Jim was instrumental in the establishment of the WFSU station on Red Barber Plaza in Tallahassee. He cherished the relationships and friendships he built with colleagues as well as the various job titles he gained from his tenure at WFSU. In 2005, Jim retired as their Director of Engineering.
When Jim wasn't working, he enjoyed being on his boat the "Sea Biscuit", especially at his favorite spot in the Apalachee Bay near St. Marks. Upon his retirement, he focused his sharp mind on learning about astronomy and computers and would spend hours meticulously writing computer programs. Jim also found the time to become a talented self-taught woodworker and learned the art of wood turning. He made beautiful pieces – including bowls, pens, vases and even furniture for both family and friends. Throughout his life, Jim was a gifted pianist and loved classical music. Most of all, Jim loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Deborah "Debby" McDaniel; sons David McDaniel (Joleen) of Key Largo, Michael McDaniel and Kevin McDaniel (Stacey) both of Tallahassee; grandchildren Taylor McDaniel and Kailee McDaniel as well as a host of extended family members and friends. Jim was preceded in passing by his parents and his siblings Nicky McDaniel and Jan McDaniel as well as his son, Richard McDaniel.
A memorial service will be held at Bevis Funeral Home of Tallahassee on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, WFSU Public Media, or any organization of choice. The family would also like to express their appreciation to the TMH Cancer Center as well as Dr. Tim Broesecker and Dr. Philip Sharp.
Breanna Green of Bevis Funeral Home (850-385-2193 or www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the family with their arrangements.
