James Garnett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson Memorial Home & Heartland Cremation Services - Plainfield on Mar. 11, 2026.
Dr. James A. Garnett, "Jim", age 95, passed away peacefully at his home on March 5, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

Jim dedicated his life to education, beginning his career as a teacher and eventually serving as superintendent of schools. His journey in education took him from Naperville to Fox River Grove to Yorkville and ultimately Sterling IL. He retired from Sterling in 1994.

In retirement, Jim and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending many happy hours on the golf course. He was a devoted fan of Florida State University from where he received his PhD and the Chicago Bears. He remained enthusiastically engaged in following the Bears throughout this past season.

Jim was very involved in his retirement community. In Carillon of Plainfield he took great pride in serving in the homeowners association, including time as president, always working to support and improve the community he cared about.

Jim was drafted into the army after graduating from Illinois State University during the Korean War era. He was also a member of the Coast Guard reserve for many years.

Above all, Jim was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren who brought him great joy.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to his longtime caregiver, Eva, whose loving care over the years was truly a blessing. Her kindness and dedication greatly enhanced Jim's quality of life.

James is survived by his devoted children Jeffery Garnett, Laurel (the late Jeff) Meyers and Jay (Cynthia) Garnett; his treasured grandchildren Alyssa Meyers, Zachery Garnett and Tyler Garnett; his dear sisters Ruth Garnett and Joan (Robert) Saraniero; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Jane Garnett; dear granddaughter Emily Meyers and his parents Albert and Adeline Garnett. Memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, March 25, 2026 from 3-8pm at Anderson Memorial Homes, 21131 W Renwick Rd, Plainfield IL 60544.
