James McKinney, 67, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Northwest Health-La Porte.
He was born January 27, 1956 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Billy Ed McKinney and Emma Loretta (Floyd) McKinney.
A lifelong resident of the area, James graduated from high school and served in the United States Army. He went on to work as a crane operator for Bethlehem Steel. James was a member of the American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83 in La Porte, IN. He enjoyed shooting at the gun range, tending to his vegetable garden and taking care of his lawn. James was a Redskins fan and loved watching ball games with his brother-in-law. He adored his animals, his cockatoo, Pretty Boy, and his dog, Toby, who he inherited from his brother. Mostly though, he was a homebody who sincerely cherished time with his family.
James is survived by his sister, Shirley Marie (Ronald) Kraus of La Porte, IN; a daughter Melissa Grace McKinney of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, James McKinney, Jr.; brothers, Billy McKinney, Jr. and Ronnie McKinney; sister, Patricia Wolfenbarger.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 from 10:00 to service time at noon, with Chaplain Missy Buche, officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IN. with military honors presented.
