James Ellis Means was born on June 1, 1953, to the late Frank and Charity Means. James departed this life and entered his eternal home on September 4, 2025, at Mobile Infirmary with loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael DeAlonzo Mason, and his grandson, Deontae Ellis Mason; and four brothers: Frank Means Jr., Arthur Means, Calvan Means Sr., and Vernon Means.

James was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church in Crossroads, where he found strength in his faith. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. James was known for his unwavering love for family and friends, always putting others before himself and sharing his warmth and kindness with everyone he met. He was cherished by all who knew him for his generous spirit, sense of humor, and steadfast dedication to his loved ones..

He leaves to cherish his memories: children, Keondra Mason of Bay Minette, AL, and Darrin (Tara) Mason of Conyers, GA; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters in love, Gwendolyn Bush Means and Margaret Bishop Crook, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
