James Paul Merrill

James Paul Merrill, of Howell, Michigan, passed away on March 18, 2026, at the age of 86.

Jim was born on August 10, 1939, to the late James and Geneva Merrill. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a radio operator, a role that sparked a lifelong passion. His love of radios continued well beyond his service, and he became an avid collector, always fascinated by their history and function.

Jim had a deep love for animals and found great joy in tending to them on his farm. Whether working outdoors or caring for his animals, he appreciated the simple, meaningful moments of rural life.

On October 24, 1987, he married the love of his life, Paddy, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Howell. Together, they built a life centered around the family farm.

He is survived by his loving wife, Paddy Merrill; his children, James Merrill and Christopher (Mary) Merrill; and his stepchildren Sandra Dexter, Brenda Foltz, Frederick Foltz, Maureen (Harold) Semear, and Scott (Tracy) Foltz. He also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Jim is further survived by his siblings, Marcy Shiels and Linda Czerniak.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his grandchildren Amanda Hoyland, Brian Sloan, and Corey Foltz.
