Dr. James Immanuel Midtling, age 69, a beloved father, friend, and legend, was called home to heaven on October 20, 2025. James, affectionately known as “Jimbo,” is survived by his six children: Matthew (Ashley), Jennifer, Christopher (Jackie), Stephanie (Sebastian Chen Schmidt), Micaela, and Olivia; and six grandchildren: Nicholas, Charlotte, Evelyn, Madelyn, Thomas, and Sienna.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; parents, John and Elsie; and brother, Stephen.
Jim was born on March 1, 1956, in Viroqua, WI. He graduated from the University of Minnesota before receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS) from Marquette University in 1987. Jim completed his residency at Montefiore Einstein Medical Center in New York City, where he began a long and distinguished career as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. His compassion and dedication to his patients were unrivaled. He was known by many to never want to take a day off from work. He felt it was his life’s duty to serve his patients and community. While many oral surgeons retire early, Jim was not one of them.
His charisma, unconventional sense of humor, and incomparable generosity were distinct aspects of his character. At any event, if you were seated at his table, it was automatically the “fun” table. He enjoyed dancing and singing loudly, specifically to his favorite songs by Bee Gees, Taylor Swift, and Coldplay. He loved going on Sunday drives and traveling, forever seeking adventure. Although he often left the games disappointed, he never gave up on his Minnesota Vikings - a true testament to his forgiving and loyal nature. He would always end the day with a chocolate bar and hours of gaming on his Nintendo Switch.
Jimbo was one of a kind; an unforgettable presence, and reliable comedic relief. He will be greatly missed by every single person who had the honor and privilege of spending time with him.
