James Carlton Mitchell, a seasoned 86, of Aurora, born in Denver, CO, passed away on August 8, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Sophia; devoted son of James and Olga Mitchell; loving Pops and father of Stephen (Nan) Kartsonis, Michael (Melinda) Kartsonis and Jim (Angela) Mitchell; proud Papou of Ryan and Cassie Kartsonis, Meagan and Garrett Mitchell, and Alexandra Murphy.

Jim was a true Coloradoan; born, raised, and but for a short stint in Kansas City, MO where he found the love of his life Sophia, a lifelong resident here in the Denver area. He loved Colorado and it fit his predominant trait; he loved deeply. A man of few words and dry wit, he possessed an unmistakable Papou look through the glasses or nod of the head that spoke volumes. He honed his ability to listen and size up the situation through his education at South High and the University of Denver, and professional career in management within the Transportation Industry. Stops included Yellow Freight (where he met Sophia), Frontier Airlines, Navajo Freight Lines, and Purolator Courier. In retirement, he contributed many years of service to the Aurora Water Board and to the Aurora Seniors Center. He was a very hard worker throughout his life and offered sage advice to many.

Outside the office, he applied extensive knowledge to working on cars, where he honed early skills in Georgetown that he would use for decades to fix anything and everything on his, and others', vehicles. He was a sports fan of Colorado teams and a frank critic when they weren't performing. He became Greek Orthodox and loved his church and his faith. He loved to listen to music and in his later years, a good nap. Most important to him, however, was his family. He adored his wife Sophia like few people have adored anyone. He cared deeply for his sons, and shared a special bond with his grandson, Garrett. He was also a softy for his canine and feline, Suzette and Frankie. Jim would do anything for a close neighbor and friend, and was known at home for disappearing while he snow plowed driveways and sidewalks up and down the street, repaired someone's home needs, or offered friendly vehicle advice.

Additionally, Jim was the father-in-law to the late Tryna Mitchell, son-in law of the late Stella Camaras, brother-in-law of the late Tulla (late James) Kasnestis, the late Tykye (Elaine) Camaras, the late Helen (late Spero) Siganos, and brother of the late Gary (late Nancy) Mitchell. He was an uncle and great uncle to many nephews and nieces, and Mr. Mitch to many friends.

Funeral Services at 10:00 am Thursday, August 14, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4610 E. Alameda Ave, Denver, CO 80246. Interment to follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Donations can be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Denver.
