A graveside service for James Durwood Mitchell, 84, of Cleburne, will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Laurel Land Funeral Home, located at 7100 Crowley Road, Fort Worth, TX 76134 with Pastor Neil Oliver officiating. There will be a time of visitation for family and friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home located at 512 N. Ridgeway Dr., Cleburne, TX 76033 on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

James Durwood Mitchell, a cherished member of the Cleburne community, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026. Born on July 14, 1941, in Cleburne, Texas, he lived a life marked by his deep faith and unwavering love for his family.

Throughout his years, James embraced the simple pleasures of life. He was a devoted believer in Christ, finding strength and comfort in his faith. He had a passion for working on old cars, a hobby that brought him immense satisfaction. Additionally, he spent many hours playing dominoes in the Union Hall at General Motors, where he dedicated an impressive 44 years of his career.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Cheryl Mitchell; three brothers and two sisters. 

James is survived by his sons, Larry L. Mitchell, Sr., Brad Mitchell and his wife Margie; his grandchildren: Tiger Mitchell and his wife Gayle, Jonathan Mitchell and his husband Michael Walker, Justin Mitchell and his wife Allyson, and Jason Mitchell and his wife Mae; his great-grandchildren, Anabelle Mitchell and Iris Mitchell; his sisters, Valdeena Meyer and Trecina Downs. 

James Durwood Mitchell leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and faith that will continue to inspire those who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed but he will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
