James Mortell Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home on Nov. 27, 2025.
James "Jim" J. Mortell, a cherished family man and friend to many, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on February 23, 1941, in Boston and raised in a closed-knit neighborhood. James's life was marked by dedication to his loved ones and a passion for life's simple pleasures.
James was the beloved husband of Marie (Gandolfo) Mortell of Quincy, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and memories, and would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on 11/28/25. Together, they raised a family that was the center of James's world. He was a devoted father to Frank J. Mortell and his wife Lynne of Weymouth, Edward J. Mortell and his wife Laurel of Marshfield, and Debra L. Murrin and her husband Kevin of Pembroke. His legacy continues through his seven grandchildren who knew him as "Poppy" -Jessica Giordano, James Mortell, Taylor Mortell, Madison Mortell, Maria Murrin, Ava Murrin, and Kevin Murrin-and two great-grandchildren, Evelyn Giordano and James Giordano Jr., who both brought him immeasurable joy.
James was the son of the late Thomas and Mildred Mortell and a brother to a large and loving family. He is survived by his siblings Thomas Mortell of Milton, Sr. Mary Elizabeth "Mildred" of New Orleans, Tina Roman of Wellesley, Pat Ferrara of Milton, Marie Mortell of South Boston, Steven Mortell of Florida, and Robert Mortell of Plainville. He was predeceased by his siblings Jean Yeomans and John Mortell.
Professionally, James was respected for his work as a Printing Foreman at Clark Franklin Press in Boston and later at Dynagraph and Spire Press in South Boston. He was the proud owner of Quality Bindery of Hingham before retiring.
Jim enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He was a man of few words, quiet, with a generous heart. James's interests and hobbies were diverse, but nothing compared to spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and playing bad golf with his sons. His love for travel took him to many places, with Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, being some of his favorite island destinations, but it was his lake house in Litchfield, Maine that he cherished most.
Above all, James was loving, kind, thoughtful and generous. His warm presence and generous spirit were felt by everyone he encountered. He was a man with a big heart, warm smile and great sense of humor who loved his family and close friends completely, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave Milton from 10:00am-12:00pm on Monday December 1st. Burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery Quincy.
