James Campbell Murphy passed away June 7, 2024 at the age of 70. He was surrounded by his loving family after a hard fought battle with cancer.
Jim was born December 20, 1953 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ned C. and Mary Campbell Murphy, and was the 4th of 5 children, and as a family we loved being able to witness the sweet relationship that he shared with his siblings: Dave (Donna), Ron (Shelly), Craig (Julie) and Kathleen (Kevin) Graham.
Jim served an LDS mission to Indianapolis, Indiana. He was married to Mary Mangum in the Salt Lake Temple June 11, 1988. Together they raised 3 daughters. Missy (Ben) Ebberts, Sharlie (Raynel) Day and Katie (Jason) O’Toole. Together they served in the Salt Lake Inner City Mission from 2014-2018.
Dad had several occupations throughout his working career. The one he was most proud of was his over 20 years as a Salt Lake City Firefighter, where he retired as an Engineer out of Station 12 near the airport.
Dad was one of the kindest people you would ever meet. He always wanted to make sure that everyone felt included. He was the greatest example of loving everyone no matter what they believed or where they came from. His heart was always in the right place.
There will be many things that will be missed about this kind soul. These are some of our favorites:
He made dad jokes cool way before Tik Tok.
He was always ready for a good party.
He could kick the ceiling in our old house
His dance moves were unrivaled and could do the worm well into his 60’s!
He had the greenest lawn in the neighborhood and his perfectly trimmed and manicured edges were the envy of the neighbors.
He would skip with us.....but only at Disneyland!
He loved vanilla ice cream that had to be microwaved for a few seconds to scoopable perfection.
DOTS, root beer floats and Dr. Pepper were also staples.
He laughed harder at AFV more than anyone should.
He was a rocker and a hippie through and through and his love for the Rolling Stones and the Beatles was always evident.
He was a fabulous Dad, but there was nothing that he loved more than being a Grandpa to his 10 grandkids: Alison, Lexie, Porter, Cael, Jordan, Stetson, Oakley, Jaden, Olivia and Harper.
Our family will always be so grateful for the amazing staff and care that Dad received at IMC.
We love you Dad. Rock On!
