James Calvin New, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on October 7, 1955, in Virginia, James was known for his love of the outdoors and his dedication to his family.

James spent much of his career as an Equipment Operator in roadworks, where he took pride in his work and contributed to the infrastructure of his community. Outside of his profession, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly fishing and hunting. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished the peace and fulfillment that nature provided.

Above all, James adored spending time with his grandchildren, who brought immeasurable happiness into his life. His family was his greatest treasure, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Henley L. New Jr. and Hazel C. New, as well as his sibling, Merrell M. New. He is survived by his loving children: Jamie New, Stacy Seltretch (New), Eric New, and Brian Batts. His spirit will also live on through his grandchildren: Hailie Seltretch, AJ Seltretch, Kylee, Zoe Marie, Jay'lynn Batts, Reagen M. Batts, Paisley B. Batts, Gracie R. Batts, and a host of extended grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his siblings: Carol N. Lash, Carl and Rosie New, Daniel W. New, and Cindy New-Watson, who will remember him fondly for his warmth and kindness.

Services to honor and celebrate James's life will be announced at a later date. His family invites all who knew him to join in remembering a life well-lived and deeply loved.
