Rock Hill, South Carolina - James Alfred Newton, of Rock Hill, died on October 4, 2025, with family by his side. Born April 30, 1956, on US Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland, he was the only child of Alfred Levern Newton and Ruth Newton Smith.
After moving around the country due to his father's military career, James and his family eventually settled down in Rock Hill, S.C., in 1971. Shortly after arriving in Rock Hill, he met the love of his life, Catherine Catoe Newton. James and Cathy started dating as soon as it was allowed in 1974, getting married (not soon enough for James) on November 6, 1977.
James was preceded by his parents, Alfred Levern Newton and Ruth Newton Smith; his father and mother-in-law, Lee Orien Catoe and Carolyn Yarborough Catoe; his son, Jonathan James Newton; and other members of his extended family.
James is survived by his wife, Catherine Newton; his two daughters, Elizabeth Wix (married to Wayne Wix) and Katie Allen (married to Jeremiah Allen); his grandchildren, Sara Wix and James Zessin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In honor of the memory of James, who was cherished by many, and in accordance with his wishes, there will not be a traditional funeral service. Instead, the family will host a gathering for relatives and friends to celebrate his life and share memories. The event will take place at Parker Funeral Home, located at 870 Saluda Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730, on Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the residence of James and Cathy Newton daily from 12 to 6 p.m.
Parker Funeral Home is responsible for coordinating the funeral arrangements.
