Age 93 of Inkster, MI
Jim was dearly loved as a husband, father, brother, Grandpa and Gpa. He was proceeded in death by his parents, James J. O'Brien and Kathleen O'Brien, Mary Kay, his wife of 65 years, son Timothy K. O'Brien (Mig), brother Gene (Kathy) O'Brien, and sister Maureen (Paul) Timar.
Jim is survived by his sisters Peggy O'Brien and Sr. Kathleen O'Brien IHM, son Michael O'Brien, daughters Eileen (Richard) Hogan, Katie (Chub) Fulks, and Nora O'Brien. Grandchildren include Jeremy (Alysun) Fulks, Alfred O'Brien, Danny (Elizabeth) Fulks, Alex Fulks and great grands: Benjamin O'Brien Fulks, Keeley O'Brien, Ethan Fulks, Jackson Fulks, Kaisynn O'Brien, Hudson Fulks, Violet Fulks, and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was active in church at St. Norbert Parish, Inkster and Sacred Heart Parish, Dearborn where he was an usher and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in the community, serving many years on the zoning board in Inkster and belonging to the Inkster Lions Club. He served in the Navy Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1993.
Jim loved traveling, camping, sailing, golfing, canoe trips, and spending time with family and friends. After retirement, Jim and Mary Kay spent half of the time camping up at Young State Park where he enjoyed sailing on Lake Charlevoix, sitting around a campfire with friends, family, a beer, and the occasional Friday fish fry. He also spent a considerable amount of time in Florida where he enjoyed the warm weather, golf, trips to Clearwater, and visiting the local American Legion and Knights of Columbus where he made many friends. He enjoyed golf weekends with his son Tim and grandsons. He liked to watch his kids, and later his grandsons who were active in sports. Jim and his contagious smile will be missed by all who knew him. To know him was to love him.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Dearborn on Wednesday, July 9 at 11am. After Mass will be a luncheon at Park Place in Dearborn, followed by a wake at the O'Brien home. Casual dress is encouraged.

My husband and I met Jim and Mary Kay at Young State Park many many years ago. We heard today about his passing, coincidentally we are camping at Young right now, our 45th consecutive summer. Every late morning Jim would say "Karen, do u want a beer?" And I would say "I don't drink beer Jim" "oh, that's right" We would watch him sail his little sunfish from the beach. Eventually we bought a 24ft Hunter sailboat and took him out on Lake Charlevoix. He was a character and I'm sure he'll be missed by all those that knew and loved him.
