James Papia Obituary
Jimmy was born July 1, 1936 in Memphis, the son of the late James Vincent Papia, Sr. and Mary Drashman Papia. He served in the United States Army Reserve for six years. Jimmy lived in Memphis and graduated from Southside High School in 1954. He married the love of his life Barbara Morris on September 5, 1962 and they moved to Somerville in 1991. Jimmy served as a policeman for Memphis Police Department for twenty-six years. He was with the United States Marshall Service for fourteen years with four years as security for West Tennessee Federal Court. Jimmy worked part-time for the Fayette County Sheriff Department for three years and was a graduate of the Federal Bureau Investigations National Academy.
Jimmy enjoyed hunting turkey and deer and mentored many young men in hunting. He was a 32-degree Mason. Jimmy was a member of First Baptist Church in Somerville where he served as a Deacon. He was a loving husband, father, uncle and brother.
Mr. Papia is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Barbara Papia of Somerville, TN; two sons, James Vincent Papia III (Hannah) of Fort Perry, Ontario, Canada and Carl Papia of Somerville, TN; and his nephew, Britt Allen McIntosch of Walnut, MS.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second parents, Ware and Gussie Morris; his sister, Trudy Papia Roberts; and his niece, Pamela McIntosh.
The memorial service for Mr. Papia will be at 2 P.M. Monday, January 22, 2024 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville, Tennessee, with Bro. Stan Smith, pastor of First Baptist Church of Somerville, officiating. A visitation for Mr. Papia will be from 12 noon until 2 P.M. and Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville.
The family requests that memorials be directed to donor's choice.

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. My dad was the coach at South Side High when Jim went/played ball there. I got to know him well when he worked in the federal building after his time at the Memphis Police Department. He did such a wonderful job in the wake of the shooting of Dr. MLK Jr. - one of the first on the scene and found one of the key pieces of evidence. I was the prosecutor and Jim testified in the made for HBO movie - the trial of James Earl Ray. Glad to know he is now with the Lord. Blessings to the family.
