James Passman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Caruth-Hale Funeral Home on Dec. 29, 2025.
James Orlan Passman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on December 22, 2025, in Troy, Michigan.
He was born on October 22, 1932, in Hammond, Louisiana, to James and Norma Passman. He was one of five children.
He is survived by his daughters, Brenda Marie Brady and Carolyn Rae Davis (Jack); his son, James William Passman (fiancé Jody); his sister, Dolores Thomas; his grandson, Jonathan Ross Davis (Laurel); his granddaughters, Ashley Kay Norris and Melissa Joy Passalacqua (Domenic); and five cherished great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie Passman; his parents, James and Norma Passman; his sisters, Jerry and Josie; his brother, Ken; his grandson, Jason; and his daughter-in-law, Julie.
James graduated from high school in Amite, Louisiana, and proudly served in the United States Air Force. During this time, he met Elsie Sinclair, and they were married on December 13, 1952, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Together, they shared a loving marriage and a life devoted to faith and family.
Feeling called to preach the Gospel, James attended American Baptist Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he pastored a church while completing his studies. After graduating, he accepted a call to Northside Missionary Baptist Church in Madison Heights, Michigan, where he faithfully served for approximately 17 years. He later pastored Oaklawn Baptist Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and concluded his pastoral ministry in Magnolia, Arkansas at Calvary Baptist Church. Upon retirement, James returned to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
James will be remembered for his unwavering faith, dedication to ministry, and deep love for his family. His life was a testimony of service, compassion, and devotion to God and others.

In 1981, J.O. Passman called me on a Sunday night. He was looking for a music and youth director and George Raley told him to give me a call. I told him I was just about to begin my Senior year of college and needed to stay at UCA. When I hung up the phone, I knew I had made a mistake. I had told God I would walk through doors that He opened and I had just closed that one. So I called Bro. Passman back and asked if the job was still open. One of the blessings of our young lives was having the opportunity to be mentored in ministry and in life by J.O. and Elsie Passman. The thought of them being together again in the presence of Jesus makes me smile. Until we meet again, friend. mickey
