James Patch Obituary

James Fred Patch, 66, of Cheyenne, a devoted man of faith and a beloved father, grandfather, and brother, went home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2026. His deep love for God and Jesus guided every step of his life in his final days.

Born to Walter H. Patch and Madelaine S. Shulz on June 15, 1959, in Laramie, Wyoming, James grew up with a profound appreciation for the beauty of creation. He found joy in the simple wonders of nature—especially insects—and nurtured a lifelong passion for the outdoors. In his earlier years, he treasured spending time with his grandpa and grandma Patch at their home in Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Whether tending his gardens, casting a line into a quiet lake, setting out on a hunting or camping trip, or capturing a scenic portrayal of a majestic mountain landscape with his oil paints, he embraced the outdoors with gratitude and awe.

A man of many talents and interests, James loved the challenge of a good game. Chess, Pinochle, and Cribbage were among his favorites, and he cherished the laughter and camaraderie these moments brought. He found joy in making others laugh. He was an avid fan of the Wyoming Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and Colorado Avalanche. His curiosity and love for learning never waned, and he shared that enthusiasm generously with family and friends.

Raised in Cheyenne, he attended East High School, and thereafter, dedicated fifteen years to serving the State of Wyoming in various roles before moving on to Echostar Satellite Corporation. There, he worked as an associate engineer for eighteen years, a position he enjoyed, until his retirement.

James is survived by his daughter Candice L. Hough (Bud) of Cheyenne, his son Martin J. Patch of Orange City, Florida, his cherished grandsons, Evan K. Hough and Blake W. Hough of Cheyenne, and his two dear sisters Carole A. Warga (William) of Parker, Colorado and Peggy Jo Patché of Springfield, Ohio. Three nieces and two nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Potteiger.

Memorial services will be held on January 14, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel followed by a reception at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Orangerie. Friends who wish may contribute to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital or Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne.
